Walking into Qualia feels like you've stepped into an old, cozy D.C. home—mostly because it is a literal house in Petworth. This original location and roasting site of the growing chain has worn-in yet stable wooden floors and rustic red brick exteriors, maintaining the homey and simple elements to this space.

Walk through the living room (filled with cozy couches, of course) to the bar, another simple room that's contrasted with extravagant equipment. A two-group Slayer Espresso machine slings shots for standard espresso beverages, while a Poursteady provides "robo brews" for a massive variety of single origins from this small-scale roaster. A small US Roaster Corp machine whirs furiously in one of the "bedrooms" leading to a spacious, quiet outdoor patio.

Grab a pastry from their many local purveyors and make yourself at home, whether you're sinking into a sofa or lounging in the shade of the front yard. Want to take your knowledge deeper? Take advantage of their regular coffee tastings.
