Bake St
58 Evering Rd, Stoke Newington, N16 7SR
Editor's Review
Bake Street is very much your cosy residential neighbourhood café near Rectory Road station but it has several unique and endearing features. The first is that is that it is run by Hackney bred siblings: Amirah who is also head baker and Feroz who is head chef. In the summertime the huge frontage is openable, making for a very pleasant place to sit. Fortunately, the drinks on offer match the relaxed, comfortable space.
Coffee is by Climpson and Sons and guest roasters and superbly made as espresso and v60 filter. The crockery is charming and the milk is from The Estate Dairy. Teas are by Chash & Novus and there is a range of black, green and white teas as well as infusions. There are some unusual drinks on offer too such as Aqua Carpatica water from Romania, Fritz soft drinks from Germany and chai made from spices and black tea blended with honey by The Little Chai Company.
Pastries are by Yeast and by Amirah who bakes downstairs. Brunches and small plates on an eclectic menu from Feroz mirror the diversity of Hackney. They range from a house granola with roasted nuts, fruit and Belgian chocolate swirls, to the Egg St Muffin (as with everything, featuring several homemade ingredients), to Persian Makhlout with chickpeas, baharat and pomegranate. Weekend sees an expanded brunch menu with Turkish inspired dishes.
Amirah’s baking features an array of home baked cakes and cookies. Counter favourites include toasted banana bread with melting Belgian choc chunks and salted caramel brownies. Bake Street love to incorporate coffee into bakes with cakes such as coffee, cardamom and orange cake. Bread is from Today Bread and eggs from Havensfield Farm. Keep an eye out as the café is planning evening barista classes with Routes Coffee.
