Espressofabriek

Pazzanistraat 39, 1014 DB Amsterdam, Netherlands

Editor's Review

It’s no exaggeration to call Espressofabriek a trailblazer in this city’s relatively young specialty coffee industry. Rick Woertman opened the cafe back in 2005, when its home turf, Westerpark, was still untrodden by tourists, and dark Italianate roasts were de rigueur in the Dutch capital. Espressofabriek has long been roasting its own coffee, and these days does so on a Giesen 15 here at its flagship. The business has spawned some of contemporary Amsterdam’s leading micro-roasters and cafe proprietors, and continues to employ top-level ’spro pros.

The interior is somewhat Spartan; the service is precise and consistent – after all, the business name translates to ‘espresso factory’ and this branch is located in what was a gas factory in the 19th century. Among the filter coffee apparatus is a, rare in these parts, 3Temp Hipster. In the late afternoon, the mood gets festive, with sales of spirits: natural wines and, from neighbouring microbrewery Troost, beers.
